Abstract This work focuses on the study of the corrosion resistance of the 3003 aluminum alloy FSW joint, as well as the corrosion mechanisms. Before proceeding with the corrosion of the FSW joint, it is important to study the effect of welding parameters on the quality of the joints. An experimental design was therefore used to highlight the effect of feed rate, rotation speed and tool tilt angle on the behavior of the 3003 aluminum alloy FSW joint. In order to better understand the corrosion mechanisms of FSW welded joints, it will be necessary to compare the corrosion in the FSW welded joint and the base metal. Three aggressive media at four temperatures, as well as the effect of adding ethylene glycol were studied by a gravimetric method by measuring the mass loss of the samples, which will be used to calculate the corrosion rate. To better understand the kinetics of the corrosion process, the thermodynamic parameters of the corrosion of the two samples MB and FSW joint were evaluated, namely: Activation enthalpy ΔHa, activation energy Ea, standard adsorption enthalpy ΔGads and activation entropy ΔSa. An experimental approach was implemented to study the effect of corrosion on the microstructural and mechanical characteristics of the FSW joint, the influence of three corrosive media was evaluated in parallel with the study of the effect of temperature, static tensile tests of the specimens taken perpendicular to the welding direction were performed. In addition, microhardness profiles allow to give the importance of the influence of the studied parameters on the different zones of the weld. The effect of the corrosive environment, the temperature and the addition of ethylene glycol on the propagation resistance of an FSW joint were studied. Fatigue-propagation tests at constant (ΔP) were performed to determine the fatigue-propagation properties, and to better understand what affects the fatigue crack propagation of welded joints after corrosive attack.
