This research is focused on the adsorbent and the catalytic performances of a local Montmorillonite (Mont-Na), for the elimination of Diuron in aqueous solutions. The materials were characterized before and after processing using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, specific surface area (SBET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis, and thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). The surface charge was determined by measuring the point of zero charge. The adsorption experiments are carried out on Mont-Na at 45 °C, then on Mont-Na at pH = 11, and finally on pillared clay (PILC-Al). With 1 g of Mont-Na added to 50 mL of Diuron (20 mg / L), the equilibrium is reached after 5 hours and the adsorption capacity is between 0.74 mg/g at 45 °C and 0.91 mg/g at pH = 11. On 0.01 g of PILC-Al at 25 °C, it is 100 mg / g at pH = 6.3. The kinetic modeling shows that the pseudo-first order describes the experimental data of the Diuron adsorption on Mont-Na and PILC-Al and the equilibrium data were modeled perfectly by applying the Elovich model. The thermodynamic quantities indicate that the adsorption process on Mont-Na and PILC-Al is spontaneous (ΔG <0) and endothermic (ΔH = 31.80 kJ.mol-1, ΔH = 25.53 kJ.mol-1, respectively). Next, the optimal conditions for the catalytic degradation of Diuron in an aqueous solution with H2O2 using (Mont-Na) and PILC-Al as the catalysts were determined. The initial concentration of Diuron used was 20 mg/L, Diuron/H2O2 (1:1 molar ratio). Tests with H2O2 without Mont-Na or PILC-Al provided a 32 % conversion rate after 8 h. However, a mixture of 1 g Mont-Na and H2O2 increased the conversion rate to 91 % after 180 min. The total Diuron disappearance was demonstrated through the use of high-performance liquid chromatography using a UV-vis detector (HPLC/UV-vis). The only by-product obtained in small quantities is: 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA). The basic pH = 9 and pH = 11 gives a 72.5 % of degradation onto 1 g of Mont-Na after 150 min in the experiment, and 65 % after 90 min with 0.01 g of PILC-Al. On the other hand, the increase in temperature decreased the degradation rate of Diuron. In conclusion, under the operating conditions used, local sodium Montmorillonite and pillared clay proved to be excellent materials for the adsorption and heterogeneous catalytic degradation of Diuron in aqueous solutions. They could be very promising for sewage treatment. Keywords: Wastewater, Pesticide, Diuron, Adsorption, Catalytic Oxidation, Sodium Clay, Al-pillared Clay, Hydrogen peroxide
