Ab-initio Study of the Physical Properties of Heusler Alloys
(2021-11-14) MAAFA Amina; Encadreur: ROZALE Habib
Abstract : Since their discovery, half-metallic ferromagnets have been the topic of many theoretical and experimental researches due to their potential applications. The well-known Heusler compounds have attracted most attention as several among them were predicted to be half metals. The family of Heuslers incorporates thousands of members exhibiting diverse magnetic phenomena, which makes them very useful in various contemporary fields such as spintronics. For this reason, we have been interested in the ternary most explored group of Heusler alloys as well as their quaternary daughter systems. At first, we have investigated a set of Co- and Fe-based ternary systems (X = Fe, Co; Y = Zr, Mo and Z = Ge, Sb) using ab-initio calculations. We found that Cu2MnAl type structure is more favorable for all compounds, except X2MoGe (X = Co, Fe) and Co2MoSb where the inverse structure was energetically more stable. After studying the electronic properties, we have identified two half-metals (Co2ZrGe and Fe2ZrSb) that could be potential for spintronics applications. Unlike Fe2ZrSb, the half-metallicity in Co2ZrGe alloy has already been predicted in few theoretical studies where the structural and electronic properties agree well to our results. We have also checked the mechanical properties of the ternary alloys. The elastic parameters indicated the mechanical stability of the four Fe2ZrSb, Co2ZrGe and Fe2MoZ (Z = Ge, Sb) materials, where the half-metallic Fe2ZrSb compound is the only one characterized by an enhanced ductility. Afterwards, we completed the previous study by forming eight quaternary structures using the same previous magnetic components. We have studied the physical properties of the quaternary XX’YZ alloys (X = Co, Fe; X’ = Mo, Fe; Y = Zr, Fe; Z = Sb, Ge) and explained their relation with the former ternary Heuslers. The DFT method was once again applied to investigate the magnetic nature of these alloys and we found two other half-metals (CoFeZrGe and CoFeZrSb). Actually, both materials have already been investigated and the resulting lattice constants and gaps were close in values to our theoretical calculations. Additionally, we have computed the elastic parameters, electronic properties as well as the thermoelectric efficiency of the quaternary XX’YZ alloys. They were found to be mechanically stable and have shown different degrees of ductility and stiffness. Besides, they could be very v efficient for the thermoelectric field applications, which paves the way for further theoretical and experimental investigations concerning these new Heuslers.

(2021-07-07) Matouk Hakima; Encadreur: BOUSAHLA Anis Abdelmoumen
Résumé (Anglais) : In this thesis, we will treat the behavior in free vibration of functionally graduated nanobeams resting on an elastic foundation and under the effect of a hygrothermal environment using a new integral beam theory of Timoshenko. In the first chapter we discussed the previously published works, Also in the second and third chapter we made a bibliographical review on nanostructures in general and study the theories of beams. The fourth chapter devoted to the presentation of the theoretical model by proposing a new theory, calculation of the dimensionless frequency and the numerical validation of simulation detailed in the fifth chapter. The mathematical model proposed for this study contains only three variables and requires the introduction of the shear correction factor because the variation of the shear stress through the thickness is uniform. The effective properties of nanobeams vary according to two sigmoid and symmetric power laws. The nanoscale is considered using Eringen theory of non-local elasticity. The equations of motion of the present model are determined and resolved via Hamilton principle and Navier method, respectively. Several numerical results are presented and illustrated in order to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of Timoshenko's integral theory. The effects of different parameters influencing the vibrational responses of P-FG and SS-FG nanobeams are also examined and discussed in detail.

Résumé ( Anglais) : This thesis studies the static and dynamic behavior of Functionally Graded Carbon Nanotubes (FG-CNT)-reinforced porous sandwich (PMPV) polymer plate. The model of nanocomposite plate is investigated within the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Two types of porous sandwich plates are supposed (sandwich with face sheets reinforced / homogeneous core and sandwich with homogeneous face sheets / reinforced core). Functionally graded Carbon Nanotubes (FG-CNT) and uniformly Carbon Nanotubes (UD-CNT) distributions of face sheets or core porous plates with uniaxially aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes are considered. The governing equations are derived by using Hamilton's principle. The solution for bending and vibration of such type’s porous plates are obtained. The detailed mathematical derivations are provided and the solutions are compared to some cases in the literature. The effect of the several parameters of reinforced sandwich porous plates such as aspect ratios, volume fraction, types of reinforcement, number of modes and thickness of plate on the bending and vibration analyses are studied and discussed. On the question of porosity, this study found that there is a great influence of theporosity on the static and vibration of porous sandwich plate. (2020-11-09) MEKAM DALILA; Encadreur: MESRI DALILA
Abstract (en Anglais) : The structural, half-metallic and elastic properties of the hypothetical half-Heusler compounds XBaGa(X=Li, Na, K, and Rb) were investigated using first-principles calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and GGA+mbj based on density function theory (DFT). The absence of the transition-metal atoms makes these compounds important model systems for the study of origin and properties of half-metallic ferromagnetism of sp electron systems. It is shown that for all the compounds the ferromagnetic state is favorable than the non-magnetic state. 'It is also found that these compounds i.e. KBaGa and RbBaGa exhibit half metallic ferromagnetic properties with an integer magnetic moment of 2 μB per formula unit at their equilibrium lattice constants. The magnetic moment mainly originates from the spin polarization of p-like states of anion and partial involvement of cationd-like states (Ba). The individual elastic constants, shear modulus, Young's moduli, ratio B/G and the Poisson's ratio were also calculated. The compounds are ductile based on the ratio B/G, they may inherently be the least brittle materials

The structural, electronic, elastic, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of new Heusler alloys Rh2MnTM (TM=Ti, Zr, Hf) are studied based on the first principal calculation using the scheme of the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) of density function theory. The investigation was carried out in ferromagnetic (FM), anti-ferromagnetic(AFM) and the non-magnetic (NM) phases of the Cu2MnAl-type structure (regular structure) and Hg2CuTi-type-structure (inverse structure). Both alloys were found to be more stable in the ferromagnetic phase of the Cu2MnAl-type structure. The equilibrium lattice parameter in this structure is equal 6.04 for Rh2MnTi, 6.39 Ǻ for Rh2MnZr and 6.35Ǻ for Rh2MnHf. The electronic properties reveled the metallic nature of the Heusler Rh2MnTM (TM=Ti, Zr, Hf) alloys. The interpretation of the elastic properties confirmed the elastic stability of the alloys in the studied structure with a good agreement between the resulting bulk modulus from the structural properties and that resulting from the elastic properties. Other elastic parameters such as modulus B, shear modulus G, Young's modulus E, Poisson's ratio (ν) and Pugh’s ratio B/G and the Zener anisotropy parameter A showed that the Rh2MnTM(TM=Ti, Zr, Hf) alloys are slightly deformed. They show high rigidity, anisotropic and little deformation and behave in ductile way. the magnetic properties confirmed the ferromagnetic state of each compound with computed total magnetic moment equal 4.37µB for Rh2MnTi 4.76 µB for Rh2MnZr and 4.60 µB for Rh2MnHf .The thermodynamic parameters were evaluated with various temperatures between 0 K to 1200 K and a pressure from 0 GPa to 50 GPa using the quasi-harmonic Debye model.
